You Make Your Entrance

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 111833

The sled is being drawn by two mules; you guess that the conditions are too harsh for horses and that the hardier mules are a better bet. The snow is currently not deep enough to seriously inconvenience them, but if your guess that the characters are headed to the North Pole is correct then surely the mules won't be able to take them all the way? Reindeer would have been much better than mules, you think, and huskies better still, but perhaps they couldn't find any.

Though the pages that you have read have done a good job of introducing you to the leading characters and telling you about their back-story, not much has actually happened so far. Apparently whoever wrote the story must have been expecting a lot of new readers who needed to be brought up to date. As a result of this lack of incident, combined with the comfortableness of the sofa, you start to feel rather sleepy...

You wake with a start. The relative warmth of the abandoned store has been replaced by bitter cold. As soon as you open your eyes, you see why. You are lying on the ground in a snowy, barren landscape, dimly lit by a sun that is very low in the sky and gives no warmth. You scramble to your feet. Are you dreaming? But the cold feels altogether too real for that. Your ripped jeans, t-shirt, socks and shoes are not at all suitable attire for these conditions. At best, your life expectancy can be measured in hours.

You look around you. You are in a fairly featureless snowfield, but there is a pine forest quite close by and a mountain range far off in the opposite direction. You decide to head for the forest before you become too cold to walk, as at least it offers the prospect of some shelter. Your hands and feet are already starting to feel numb.

But just then you notice a black dot against the snow, and it quickly becomes apparent that it is rapidly approaching. When it comes close enough for you to make out details, you aren't too surprised to see that it's a mule-drawn sled carrying three people. As you expect, when it gets closer you see that they are Fred, Astra and Checkers.

The sled draws to a halt beside you. "It's lucky for you that we came along," Fred says. "You wouldn't have lasted long dressed like that. How did you come to be out here in the middle of nowhere?"

"Fred, her story can wait," Astra says. "Can't you see that she's freezing? Why don't you start a fire so she can warm herself, and I'll see to her clothing...

  1. "It's lucky that we brought a spare outfit with us."
  2. "She can have my parka, gloves and boots. Her need is much greater than mine, and I don't really feel the cold."
