Outside the caves the sun must have set. Astra let out a low moan, and then Fred saw that her skin was rapidly turning into scales and her fingernails and toenails were changing into talons. "Quick!" she said. "Do it now, before it's too late! I will soon be beyond your power to kill."

  1. But Fred still hesitated.
  2. Fred steeled himself, and drove his sword into Astra's heart.
  3. Fred struck, but the scales were already too strong and his sword failed to penetrate them.
