the demons watched with intense interest as the human plunged his sword
into the body of the she-dragon. there was little blood, the demons were
a bit disappointed at that, yet still there was death. the creatures
wanted to scoop up the fallen corpse and chew its bones, but the human did
not leave. indeed, the human took the corpse, laid it upon a slab of
stone and arranged its hands and legs! the demons were quite puzzled at
this, they had rarely seen humans before, and their elders had told them
only "goblin tales" where the hunched ones were either driven by the
cunning mortals or the humans became their feed. The demons stretched
their necks to catch all that the human was doing.
~~poor, poor woman~~ thought Fred. ~~in the prime of her life and cursed beyond all redemption~~ Then Fred heard a stone fall, as if from a high point. He looked about but saw nothing. Still, he felt like he was being watched. ~~well, with my duty done, I should leave. Her body must stay here, her memory is what I shall take~~ Then he left that part of the caves. the demons slowly left their rock niche, their stone bodies seemd to be part of the wall -- a crafty camoflauge for the demon-gargoyles. they approached the she-dragon, they sniffed her, and prodded her with their talons. she was dead, no doubt about it. then, without any other hesitation they began to eat her. far from the grizzly scene and equally far from the presence of Fred, a small creature was resting on its lily-like patch of scum that floated along the quiet pool of a subterannean stream. It had lived there many years, more than it could remember. It liked the cool, cool darkness. It liked the waters of the pool. It rarely left the place for either the upper or the lower regions of the wide, wide caverns. It never got lonely, for it kept itself company. You see, the creature was completely schizophrenic.
