"Oh my dear," Susan chuckles vaguely, "I'm afraid I've quite forgotten what I was going to say. What were we talking about, again?"

It is quickly becoming clear to Charlie that the old woman Susan has become is, in fact, quite senile. He decides

  1. that he must go on this journey, but first he must find an aid to take care of Susan.
  2. that he cannot leave her alone like this, and indeed cannot find it in himself to leave her like this at all.
  3. that it may be best for both of them to place her in an old folks' home and get on with his life unburdened.
