Charlie blinks, which pushes a couple tears out of his eyes, but now he just looks confused. "Really?"

"Of course." Susan struggles her way out of the bed, and Charlie comes to assist her. When she tries taking a step, her hip hurts terribly, and it's around this time when she realizes it's very difficult to see. But she must press on, for the child.

They make it to the kitchen and she begins fumbling through the cabinets, squinting something fierce as she tries to assemble the ingredients she will need. As she bakes, Charlie sits at the table and explains the situation. He doesn't know what went wrong with the elixir, and he's not sure he trusts himself to try again. He thinks the next thing he will try is journey to find a sorcerer who may be able to help. He anticipates being gone for a long time, so he will leave an aid with Susan to assist her in her old age.

Susan

  1. protests against this. She says they should both write letters to magic users and hope for an offer of help, but will not allow such a young boy to go on the journey by himself.
  2. says that Charlie should ask Antony, the local blacksmith, an able-bodied man whom Susan likes and trusts, to accompany him.
  3. finds that she can't quite remember what they were talking about.
