The knight, whose name Fred had learned was Gavin, had appeared mere days before as a fairly handsome well-muscled young man of about twenty-five, nearly six feet tall, with suntanned skin, soft blond hair, and wide brown eyes. But now, he didn't quite reach four feet, and was even shorter than Riella herself. He appeared as a small man with leathery brown skin, a skinny frame, enormous dull black eyes, a high forehead, a sharp nose, a completely bald scalp, gnarled fingers, and crooked teeth. He could still speak but normally communicated only in grunts, and the only thing he wore was a small loincloth fashioned from a potato sack. Frankly, it was already becoming difficult to remember that he had once been human. The Fred part of her had screamed even as she administered the series of potions that this wasn't right, but the Riella part managed to convince herself for just long enough that she was indifferent to the knight's fate. Either way, they could at least agree that it was important for Wenda to believe there was nothing amiss with her daughter, and this was something the old Riella would not have hesitated to do. The last unfortunate visitor to their cottage had been turned into a bush by Riella herself, and the one before that, when Riella was only twelve, had been her first experience changing someone into a toad. Fred had no idea where that toad was today. And the bush was still healthy and growing, producing herbs that Wenda often used in her elixirs. The moment Wenda passed out of earshot for her trip to the marketplace, Riella began gathering supplies--food, water, money, a change of clothes, and all the portable supplies she would need to create a potion that might be able to restore Gavin. As soon as that was finished, she grabbed a couple more small vials that might be useful, as there was still some room in one of her pockets, and smashed everything that remained in the cottage. One day, when she was Fred again, she'd return in force, capture that witch, and restore the person she'd turned into a bush, but for now, she and Gavin had to get away. She took the little goblin and left the cottage for what she hoped beyond hope would be the last time. After two days of travel...
