The stew was more delicious than Gavin cared to admit, but when he began to feel drowsy after only the third bite, he immediately sprang to his feet and said, a bit too loudly, "Miss, this is very kind of you, and I'm sorry I can't finish it, but I'm really not very hungry." The girl only gave him a look of disbelief, and pushed the bowl closer. She was so beautiful, and she looked so disappointed. "I've been ill lately, you see," he tried. "My stomach can't handle much. Please, will you just point me in the right direction?" He knew he was fighting a losing battle. She wasn't going to give him directions. Even if she did, he'd have to invent some reason to stay for hours after, and that would definitely look suspicious. The stew looked and smelled so tasty... Reluctantly, he sat back down, and brought the spoon again to his lips. The girl smiled.
Inside ten minutes he was deeply unconscious, and another hour later, Wenda was back in the cottage. By this point Riella was beginning to feel a little strange. Memories that didn't seem to reconcile with her life danced at the edge of her mind, but she couldn't pin down any of them to learn the details. She did her best to ignore this strangeness, as her mother congratulated her on a job well done, and continued,
