The resemblance between Stacy and the woman in the illuminations really
was very
striking. And, the thought occurred to her, "Stacy" could well be a
diminutive form of
"Anastasia". Was it possible that she was the reincarnation of this woman?
Could
that explain how she could understand the medieval French in which the
scroll was written?
Meanwhile the mesmerist and charlatan known to his associates only as The Professor [6171] was brooding. When they had met at the doughnut shop and he had put his proposition to Stacy, he had not expected that she would be able to refuse him. And she had the perfect combination of skills for the project, too. Fortunately, though he had not expected to be turned down, he had nevertheless taken the precaution of having previously implanted a trigger phrase in her mind. By using that phrase, he had been able to ensure that she would forget ever having met him, removing any risk that she might inform on him to the police. She might forget other things as well, for it was difficult to target hypnotic suggestion that precisely, but that was not his concern.
