A Second Chance

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 110900

“Bloody hell!”

Fred lifted himself up from the shallow waters he had fallen in. He was confused as to where he was and what had happened, but he was also soaked and sore and all he wanted to do right then was get out of the cold water. He waded his way to land, cursing and using Granas’s name in vain the whole way.

It took a moment for him to remember everything that had happened, but when he did, he felt foolish and disgusted with himself. In his moment of rage and sorrow, he wasn’t thinking clearly and did the stupidest thing he could have possibly done.

Yet he not only survived but was in great condition, considering he had just jumped off a cliff. No bones were broken, nothing was sprained or twisted, and didn’t have a concussion. Aside from his body being extremely sore and scratched up from the smashing, sliding, and thorns and having a slight headache, he felt fine. Fred hadn’t believed in Granas since he was a boy and doubted he would ever become the religious type, but at that moment, he truly questioned if someone had intervened. It was unreal that he was still alive.

And if he was still alive, perhaps Tarsa was too. After what just happened to him, anything was possible. He would at least make sure she was dead before trying to kill himself in despair (Granas, why hadn't he done that earlier?).

Between the armor and the water-soaked clothes, Fred felt very weighed down, so he undressed himself to his underclothes and took a look as to where he was. The heavy mists protruding from the waterfall made it difficult to make out anything within or by the shore of the lake. Along the shores and further from it, copious misshapen boulders strewed the land to the point of turning this canyon into a labyrinth. It was going to be difficult to get out of here, let alone find a body.

He was starting to feel his hope slip away again when he heard something that made his heart jolt: laughter. A feminine laughter. Between the crashing of the waterfall and the minor headache, it was so faint that he wondered if it was his imagination. However, he heard it again. It was clearer now. Loud vibrant giggling like that of a child. It appeared to be coming from another part of the shore shrouded by the waterfall’s mist.

“Tarsa!” Fred cried! He ran around the lake to where he thought the giggling came from but no one was there. Before he even had a chance to be frustrated, he heard the giggling again, this time much louder, clearer, and closer. It was coming from where he had just come.

Fred stood there, not sure what to do. Was the laughing Tarsa’s or someone…or something else? He had never gone as far out into the outskirts of these lands as he had looking for her and, although he had never believed in such superstitions himself, travelers, soldiers, drunkards, and storytellers in every Tavern told stories of deadly creatures roaming the land and using tricks and manipulation to capture their prey. Perhaps something worse than the fall awaited him.

He heard then the giggling again, crackling, sharp, and right behind him

  1. Before he could turn around, he was pushed into the lake. “Tag! You’re it!” said Tarsa, giggling like a child and running away.
  2. He turned around and saw a beautiful naked woman. Unfortunately, she was not the one he was looking for.
  3. He turned around and saw a little girl. She looked just like Tarsa, but was significantly younger.
  4. He turned around and saw nothing. What was going on? Did he hit his head harder than he thought?
