Astra thought that it would be rather rude to just toss down some hay from above while remaining in the shadows, so she took a big armful and then - very carefully, since she could not use her hands to hold onto anything - climbed down the ladder and stood facing Beatrice.

"Thank you," Beatrice said. She took the hay and started feeding it to the horse.

  1. "My name is Beatrice," she said.
  2. She gave Astra a long look. "Don't I know you from somewhere?" she said. That disconcerted Astra. She had not thought that she could be recognised from her seven-year-old self, especially as it had been fifteen years ago that Beatrice had seen her last.
