"Hello!"

She needn't tell Beatrice who she was. Though she had recognised Beatrice, it seemed unlikely that Beatrice would recognise her, since she had only been seven when they had last met. She couldn't help wondering if Beatrice's sudden, unexplained disappearance all those years ago had been because she had eloped with Henry.

So she called down: "Hello! Please don't be alarmed. Your husband said that I might spend the night in the barn."

Beatrice looked up and saw Astra.

1. As Astra had expected, she showed no sign of recognising her.
2. Unexpectedly, Beatrice said: "Don't I know you?"
3. Astra's assumption that Beatrice must be Henry's wife was incorrect. She was someone else's wife, and hence very confused by what Astra had said.
