In the Tower

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 110040

The old man stroked his partially grey beard. "Come then, bring her in."

After bringing his horse around back to a small stable, the armor-clad man removed Fred from its back and flung her over his own like a sack of potatoes. Fred ground her teeth, infuriated by the indignity.

The man entered in through the back door of the tower and stopped. Fred tried to find a position that would afford her a better view of what was happening, but being upside down made that immediately difficult. "You can set her down," she heard, and recognized the voice of her captor's customer.

She was quickly turned upright and placed on her feet, but it had been hours since she'd stood, her feet were still tied together, and she would have fallen flat on her face if the man hadn't still been gripping her upper arm tightly, his gauntlet digging into her skin.

"Her muteness is actually extremely convenient," the older man mused. "I do like my peace and quiet. Speaking of which, you've earned a respite--why don't you go have a rest? There's food on the kitchen table, if you'd like some."

The man pulled off his helm, and Fred saw his face for the first time. "Don't mind if I do," he said, and released Fred's arm to head for a door across the wide room in which they were situated. Fred fell over like a tree, and as the door closed behind him,

  1. her head was spinning. Her captor was an Allarian knight, as she had been not so long ago--Sir Ricardo O'Farrell, a close personal friend of Fred's! What could have led him down this path?
  2. the older man crossed his arms, observing her. "You're quite a pretty thing," he said offhandedly. "I can't wait to get started."
  3. the older man crossed his arms, observing her. "You're quite a pretty thing," he said offhandedly. "You ought to make as good a specimen as that foolish knight is proving to be."
  4. the older man approached her. "I'm sorry, I truly am. But this is necessary; so much is at stake."
  5. the older man immediately rushed across the room and began to undo her bonds. "I'm so sorry, my dear," he said, tears running down his face. "I let this happen."
  6. the older man stayed a healthy distance from her. "So. Fished from the river, eh?" he murmured, brow creased deeply in thought--and worry?
  7. the older man immediately began to cast a spell.
