When Fred woke up and left his cave, he found that spring had arrived. He realised that, as the voice had promised, he must have successfully hibernated. That would explain why he felt so ravenously hungry. What did bears eat? He assumed that it must be primarily meat and possibly fish, but he recoiled from the idea of hunting and killing prey and then eating it raw.
