Fred stared down at her tail. The stakes were high--if she became a mermaid on dry land, she would die. But this was her only option to escape this fate, even with limitations. Though with much reluctance, she signed the bottom of the scroll, and once she was finished, Narissa snapped her fingers, and a seashell appeared on a string around Fred's neck. "This will glow faintly with the light of the sun," said the sea witch, "and will fade as the sun does. When the last bit of light disappears from the bottom, you will turn back into a mermaid, and if you are not in my sights, the contract will be broken. Use it to know how much time you have left." Fred examined the seashell, noting that it held a definite shred of light. "The contract goes into effect now. I'll be nice and let you have tonight to yourself, to sort things out." Narissa held up her hand, fingers ready to snap, and she grinned. "But I will see you tomorrow night, dear." Fred's body was immediately plunged into unbearable pain, and a series of bloodcurdling screams tore from her. Her tail felt like it was being split in half, her chest was being resized, her entire body was completely reshaping itself. When it was done, she was at the very least horribly sore, but her lungs were on fire with the lack of air, and she... he... began clawing her way to the surface, blackness tinting the edges of his vision, and nearly overcoming him by the time he broke the surface. He pulled himself onto shore what felt like hours later, and his only thought before succumbing to unconsciousness was horror at the idea of doing this every single morning. When he woke up, it was full dark, and he sat up with a start, wondering how much time he'd already lost. Well, the witch had said he could have tonight, so he was safe... but he had only the span of today before he'd have to return here to honor his agreement with Narissa. He was completely naked, except for his shell pendant. How would he enter civilized society? On second thought, was there a civilized society close enough to here for him to make a life for himself? Only one way to answer that. He started walking.
