Fred could only stare down at herself as the witch continued talking, taking in the mass of tentacles, and she felt bile rising up in her throat. Narissa was right; there was absolutely nowhere she could go and nothing she could do while she looked like this. Immediate escape seemed utterly impossible. But... if the witch intended to teach her about magic, maybe sometime in the hopefully not-too-distant future... she could help herself. "Kid," came the witch's sharp voice, cutting through her thoughts. "You got a brain up there?" Fred was immediately at attention. No sense making her angry. "That's more like it. What's your name?" "Fred," she responded honestly after a moment of hesitation. Narissa made a face. "What a ridiculous name. I'll call you Firtha. Go get some sleep, Firtha. We shall start early tomorrow and you'll need your strength. Your bedroom's that way." Narissa immediately was off doing some chore and Fred was left to navigate to her new quarters in this half-octopus body on her own. It was an absolute mess, and utterly revolting. Nothing felt solid or certain. She found herself missing her short-lived tail. She was emotionally and physically exhausted by the time she found her way to the bed of kelp, and sleep came quickly. But sure enough, Narissa woke her bright and early, describing her first lesson. In the days that followed, Fred gradually became used to navigating in this body. She learned about the most basic potions that Narissa could make, and it was admittedly rather fascinating. The witch wasn't overly pleasant to interact with, but she knew a lot, and Fred was often content just to listen to her talk. When she wasn't being directly taught, she was cleaning Narissa's supplies and collecting ingredients. As far as she knew, Narissa had placed no magical restraints on her, but she was right that Fred wasn't going anywhere until she could, at the very least, make herself a mermaid again.
