The Never Ending Quest - Episode 109691

Fred was shocked. For some reason, all she could think to say was, "But I can't sing."

"Don't be silly. All merfolk have beautiful voices. I know not all can attain siren status, but do not worry; I'll train you. Now what was your name?"

"Fred," the unfortunate mermaid whispered.

"Fred? That's a ridiculous name. I shall call you Laranna. Come Laranna, it's time for your first lesson."

Fred was disturbed to find she really did have a marvelous singing voice. He'd never been much for music as a man, but now she could learn very quickly how to do amazing things with her voice. Narissa even told her that accomplished sirens could train themselves to sing the ocean into a frenzy, creating terrible storms.

Thus it was, for many months. Narissa would train Fred--or "Laranna," as she called her--for several hours every day. Truly it was exhausting work, and Fred slept soundly every night, though nightmares were not uncommon. She wasn't sure whether the food that Narissa gave her was typical merfolk food; it always looked putrid enough to make her gag, but somehow tasted heavenly. According to Narissa it would help the quality of her singing. On the rare days Fred was feeling hopelessly rebellious enough to refuse to utter a sound, Narissa would somehow slip her a potion that would make her sing almost nonstop until she passed out from exhaustion. Fred quickly learned her lesson.

After eight months of painstakingly fine tuning Fred's already gorgeous voice, Narissa woke up the mergirl early one morning and said, "There's a ship approaching about six miles to the east. Time to put all this practice to use. I've lengthened your tether by several miles so you'll be able to intercept them. Don't get too excited; I can shorten it again at any moment, and even send some spells through it."

And so Fred, tasked to murder a crew of innocent men, set off.

  1. She swam directly to the west. She knew Narissa would be furious, and she knew she would be punished severely. But she would not willingly kill anyone who had done nothing wrong. And maybe she'd be lucky enough to find someone who could help her...
  2. She headed in the direction of the ship, intending to warn them to turn around for their own safety.
  3. She headed in the direction of the ship, unsure of what to do, but more or less resigned to the monster she had become.
  4. After she spotted the ship, and watched the men for a little while, she began to feel a growing resentment for them, and excitement for what she was about to do. Somewhere in the back of her mind she wondered if Narissa had done something to her.
  5. As she approached the ship, she heard the crew calling out, apparently to the ocean around them: "Sir Fred!" "It took a lot to track you to this location!" "Are you there?" "We can help you!"
