The Bridge That Wasn't

From being close to the bank when she fell in, she was swiftly swept into the middle of the river. She kicked off her shoes, and slipped off her knapsack - by now nearly empty in any case. She was able to keep her head above water, but her weak body could not swim strongly enough to bring her to the bank. She had no choice but to let the river take her where it would, and hope that it deposited her on the shore before she became too fatigued to float any longer.

1. Her dress was weighing her down as the material became waterlogged, but she managed to unbutton it with one hand and slip out of it.
2. She saw that the river was carrying her towards a point where it plunged into a cave. Then she was borne onwards into complete darkness.
3. She saw an overhanging branch and attempted to grab it.
4. She saw that she was approaching a bridge - hopefully a real one this time - and attempted to cling on to one of its supports as she was carried under it.
5. Someone saw her and attempted to rescue her.
