There were no villages near the dragon's cave - it was not a very safe
place to be -
so the trio would have to rely on the supplies in Fred's pack until they
reached the
lowlands of Aqualaria. Their way out of the cave system had been the one
by which
Fred (and Astra) had originally entered. It was on the northern side
of the great Shreken
mountain range that divided Allaria from Aqualaria. Not far away was a
pass through
the mountains that Astra had used on her outward journey. It was not a
major trade route like
the Tumbar Road but was passable by people traveling on foot. Now,
however, they found it guarded
by a group of Allarian soldiers who bid them halt.
As the men goggled at Astra, their leader - a sergeant - said that they had been instructed not to let anybody pass. "The whole of Aqualaria is in uproar. There have been reports of riots and massacres, and it is said that law and order have totally broken down. We will not let anybody through, for their own safety. And we are making sure that no-one from Aqualaria attempts to come the other way." That was bad news to Astra in particular, of course. Was it the doing of the Cardassii, or had just the knowledge that they were free - and the intense fear as a result - had such a drastic effect on the populace? Fred dug in his backpack and found the parchment that he was looking for. "I am Lord Frederigo D'Honaire, son of the Duke of Suffex," he said, "as this parchment shows. It bids all to allow me safe passage. It is vital that you let us pass. The safety of Allaria - indeed the whole world - could depend on it." The sergeant pondered a moment. He could not read, but he recognised the ducal seal that the parchment bore. Then he said:
