Beginning to panic, she scoured her mind for any recollections, pieces of knowledge, even her name... but there was nothing. Only a vague sense of wrongness that she could not shake. She cast her eyes to the old woman across the room, who rose slowly. "Don't fret, child," she said. "I know this must be scary, but you're fine. I've made you some stew; come eat and I'll explain." Of course, the witch explained nothing, and as the frightened, disoriented girl ate, she succumbed yet again to sleep. It was a process, what Wenda was trying to set up, and it would take four potions in total, the chronology of which she'd arranged as logically as she could. This time, when her guest woke up, she had regressed to the age of six years old, and appeared as a beautiful young girl with shiny gold hair and very pale skin. The only memory she currently had was of waking up, being panicked about something, and eating stew, but she was sure that she was supposed to be... different, somehow. It took a while to get her to eat this time, but after an hour or so she accepted the old woman's offers of food. She fell asleep within ten minutes, and this time, when she woke up, she had memories. Her name was Riella, and her mummy was a witch. They had lived here in the forest for as long as she could remember. Her mummy was very good to her, and sometimes taught her recipes for potions. Mummy could do only a little magic on her own, but she knew a ton of potion recipes. Sometimes she hurt people with her potions, but only people who deserved it--a lot of the time for trespassing on her land. But she never hurt Riella. Of course, it was all fake. The original personality and memories of this mute wench were suppressed, and with luck would eventually fade into oblivion. Wenda had been wishing for a daughter to whom to pass along her magical knowledge for some time, and this was her way of getting one. The final potion gave very limited magical abilities to her new daughter--even more limited than her own, but sure enough, they were there. Riella was overjoyed when she discovered then a couple weeks later. And thus it was, for many moons. The little girl who had once been Fred lived in the hut in the forest with the very witch who had enchanted her, and was never the wiser. Wenda taught her how to make potions, how to use her magic, and how to treat other people.
