"What makes you think that the Cardassii are already free?" asked
Astra. "Well, the
scroll..." "The scroll was not clear. It may have been but a warning of
events that
still lie well in the future." "More than that, though," said Fred. "Not
long before
I entered the caves, and so probably well after you had been imprisoned by
the dragon, I
met a traveler from the south who said that Karator had recently erupted
with such violence that the whole of the top of
the mountain had been blown off. I didn't realise at the time what that
implied, of course, but now..."
Astra was silent for the best part of a minute as she absorbed this shocking news. Eventually, when Fred was beginning to wonder if she would ever speak again, she said: "So the Cardassii are free then. Let us hope that the latter part of the myth is as true as the main part, not that I have much hope. And even if it's true, although the scroll was given to you, I am yet to be convinced that you are the man of whom the myth speaks. Still, I suppose since you are the only man available, I shall have to hope that you are indeed the One and that the Elementals have guided you to me." "The Aqualarians must know that the volcano has exploded," Fred said. "What will they be doing now? Apart from praying to the Elementals to save them, that is."
