Josh found after a while that the men's conversation was starting to pall, and so he picked up a discarded newspaper. He saw that it bore today's date, that is to say Tuesday, October 6, 1914. He knew that the war in Europe would have been raging for a couple of months now, though it had not yet acquired the name of the Great War. Although it would be several years before the United States became a combatant, Josh saw that Americans must be closely following its progress, as news about the conflict dominated the front page. There was also much news about the bloody civil war that was in progress in Mexico. However there were plenty of more cheerful items to be found if one searched the inside pages. In one such item, he discovered that on the following day Mr. Joseph Patrick Kennedy would be marrying Miss Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald, the daughter of the Mayor of Boston.
