With that, the crone left the room. Though she had looked about eighty originally, in spite of taking twenty years from both Freda and Astra she still looked at least sixty. Perhaps her remark that she aged significantly more slowly than non-magical people meant that she had originally been much older than her apparent eighty? If her target age was thirty, say, then getting there might age both Freda and Astra to around seventy.

"We have to escape before the next session," Astra said, continuing to tug frantically at her chains.

"It's hopeless," Freda said. "These chains are far too solid."

"But the bedposts that they're fastened to may not be. My bed looks pretty ancient, and I think the wood could be rotten. I'm sure that I can feel the posts giving a little every time that I tug."

  2. It took several more hours, but eventually Astra succeeded in breaking all four bedposts. Once she was free, she was able to fetch the key, which the crone had left on a table across the room, and she then undid all their chains.
  3. It took time, but eventually Astra succeeded in breaking all four bedposts and getting free. However there was no sign of the key, so she would be left wearing the chains. Worse, Freda's bed was far more robust, and there was no chance of freeing her.
