Andrea was reflecting on just how sheltered her upbringing had been as a
lord's
daughter, so that
a war could take place between two countries not that far away
without her finding out about it. Then Velus barked, interrupting her
thoughts, and she looked
up to see a sizeable force of the dragon's men at the far end of the
tunnel and
heading towards them.
Astra immediately snapped out of her unhappy reverie. "Breaking the chains must have triggered some magical warning system," she said. "Fortunately the tunnel is narrow enough that only a couple of them can come at us at a time. Assuming they only have swords, that is. If any of them have crossbows then we're sunk." She continued, addressing Andrea: "Girl, may I borrow your sword? I suspect I'm more skilled with the weapon than you are." Andrea bridled at being addressed as "girl" - though to be fair Astra did not yet know her name - and she was reluctant to give up her sword. However she did not want to die, and if this princess was as legendary as Adrian had said then Andrea had to concede that she was almost certainly better with a sword than she was herself. So she reluctantly handed the weapon over. Adrian and Astra engaged the first two of the dragon's men. Andrea quickly realised than Astra was a very fine swordsman indeed, better than Adrian, even though he was good himself. The first two opponents were soon dispatched, and another two took their places.
