Baby Erika and Elba were sweet and happy infants, though often they would sleep fitfully and wake up crying. Their parents weren't sure what the problem was—they couldn't think what such young children, only a few weeks old, could be having nightmares about. Though often it seemed like that was what caused the fitfulness—nightmares.
As they grew, well looked after by their loving mother and father, they seemed to settle down a bit, though quieter nightmares were not infrequent. It was obviously a comfort to share a room with one another. They were perfectly identical, so much so that their parents worried, in the days before they learned how to talk, that they would mix them up. They both were very small, with wavy golden hair and pale blue eyes.

Elba hiccuped and accidentally turned her hair brown. This was how it was discovered that she had been born with magical powers.

Erika began to babble incessantly about a dragon. Their parents assumed that she had heard some scary stories from the older village children, and began to limit her and Elba from playing with them as much.
