As far as Hannah saw it, she had been Fred up until very recently, but she wasn't anymore. And it was as simple as that. Belboz was tremendously pleased at the success of his spells, enough that Fred's compliance, whether willing or not, endeared him significantly to the girl the knight had become. He took her to her new mother, but promised he would come visit every year or so. The only time Hannah felt any real discontent because of how different this life was from the one that was rightfully hers was when she was exposed to evidence of that former life. When she passed by the training yard, when she glimpsed the armory, and especially when she saw people she used to know as Fred--plenty of friends and even a couple cousins worked in the castle. But the castle was so large, and her new intended role so different, that these disturbances were not so difficult to avoid, and that was something she actively tried to do. Because if she became unhappy enough, she started to wonder if she should do something about it. Fortunately, her melancholy became easier and easier to overcome the older she became, and she got through a full decade as Hannah without mishap. Belboz visited frequently, and never directly alluded to her life as Fred, but always asked how she was getting on. She regarded him as a kind uncle and loved seeing him, and always assured him profusely that she was incredibly content. At the age of twenty-one, she became a lady-in-waiting to Queen Jastina. A young knight (whom she had known as a brand new page shortly before leaving on her quest as Fred) was courting her, and made her very happy. She had grown into a beautiful woman with many friends. Life was perfect. Then came the day...
