"Now then, sweet Hannah," said Belboz, and the girl automatically looked up in recognition at the name. "You're about to meet your new mother. You probably want to look your best." She nodded readily, then stopped, confused. Belboz held his hands out to his sides, and two outfits materialized in the air: a simple but very nice grey tunic, and a large white dress with an abundance of pink bows and frills. "Which do you fancy?" A squeal of delight escaped Fred and she reached for the dress, hardly looking at the tunic. Belboz smiled and snapped his fingers. Fred was now wearing the dress. She twirled in place, gasping at its loveliness. After a moment, though, she stopped herself, and looked back up at Belboz, confusion and fear written large across her face. The wizard smiled. "That seems to have done the trick. You may still think you are Fred. But soon enough, you'll be Hannah." Belboz spent the next hour feeding the girl and made light conversation. Fred spent it trying time and time again to go against her new girlish and juvenile nature, and, time and time again, failing. At the end of the meal, Belboz folded his napkin and said, "All right, Hannah, it is time to meet your new mother. She's very excited to see you. She had already bought plenty of pretty dresses for you and decorated your room with plenty of pink. How does that sound?" He stood up, smiling, and held out his hand to the nine-year-old. She...
