Parallel Storylines (Astra): Things Could Be Worse

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 108166

Deciding that she probably isn't in imminent danger, Astra remains sitting for the time being so as not to risk exacerbating the bleeding from her head wound. As she waits for the blood to clot, she wonders what Fred's fate has been. Things had not been looking good for him when she was transported away. Though she regards him as being none too bright, his heart had seemed to be in the right place, so she hopes that he has somehow managed to avoid getting himself killed.

After ten minutes or so, the bleeding seems to have stopped, though a lump is coming up on her skull. Very slowly and carefully, she gets onto her knees and then stands up. She feels dizzy for a moment, but that quickly passes. As far as she can tell, she isn't suffering from concussion and doesn't have a skull fracture, which is encouraging. Apart from her head injury, she has acquired a few more cuts and bruises, but nothing that appears at all serious.

She walks slowly forward towards the bend in the tunnel, trying not to make any noise and prepared to duck back into cover if necessary. Her caution proves to be unnecessary, as when she peeps round the corner she doesn't see anyone. The light is being produced by a burning torch fixed in a bracket that is fastened to the wall of the tunnel.

Who could have put the torch there? Her first thought is that it must have been the fire dragon, but then she reflects that dragons appear to have remarkably acute night vision and that it seems unlikely that the wyrm would need to go to the trouble of having torches placed in the tunnels. But if not the dragon, then who?

Deciding that it would be pointless to speculate, but that the important thing is that she needs light, Astra levers the torch out of the bracket and goes on her way. The sound of dripping water gets louder, and soon her torch shows a place it is trickling down a wall of the tunnel and forming a small pool.

  1. Feeling thirsty, and not knowing when next she might have the chance, she takes a drink.
  2. Not feeling thirsty, she continues along the tunnel.
  3. The pool's water is very clear, and she can see something beneath it glittering in the torchlight.
