In the gloom and shadows of the darkened prison cell, Astra and Fred eventually sit in silence. Fred leans against the wall opposite the window and peers up at it. Astra sits in the center of the room, cross-legged and eyes closed. With an echoing bang (and before Astra can open her eyes, or Fred turn his head) a panel at the bottom of the cell door slides open and a trencher is shoved into the room. The panel closes immediately. "Hey! What's going on? What do you want with us?" Fred yells, crouching in front of the door and yelling at the panel. There is no reply, and the prison seems even quieter than before. Astra, having grabbed the plate, lifts it up to her face to examine its contents: a bun of hard bread, some slop that looks like boiled meat, and two tubers."Poison, you think?" Fred, now distracted from his yelling, licks his lips. "Could be," Astra mutters, "but if it isn't, this means they want us for something. Keeping us healthy means they might have use for us." For a moment the pair is frozen, then Fred's right hand darts out and grabs the piece of bread. He tears off a piece, soaks it in the meaty slop and bites down hungrily.
