Anticipating Dinner

"I confidently expect that Mr. Burbank will be joining us for dinner. That is why you will learn more then. The note that I gave to the teller to deliver to him asked him to join us for dinner at our hotel at 7:30. The teller will tell him that the hotel in question is the Alexander."

"But why should be agree to have dinner with two people that he does not know? And how did you know to write out a dinner invitation and put it in the envelope ahead of time?"

1. "I keep a spare dinner invitation in my pocket. One never knows when it will prove useful. I find that the recipient is so curious as to why a stranger should invite him to dinner than he usually accepts. It is always a 'he', for reasons of propriety.
2. "I can only repeat myself: You will learn a little more over dinner this evening."
