It appears that one ability that dragons have is seeing well even when there is little light. Turning his head towards the noise that he has heard, Fred spots a tiny dog on the far side of the cavern who is somehow managing to drag an unconscious woman many times its size across the floor, by means of the foot that it is holding in its jaws. Strangely, the woman is naked above the waist, but from the way that her lower half is clothed Fred can tell that she is a warrior. That must mean that she is an Aqualarian, for that is the only country that Fred knows of that permits women to fight. Her body combines beauty with obvious fitness, but her most notable feature is the mane of red hair that trails behind her as she is pulled on her back across the floor.
Fred wonders how she comes to be in the caves? Was she here to fight the dragon? Has she perhaps already encountered the beast? That might explain her unconsciousness and perhaps the loss of half her clothing, though there are no obvious signs of any wounds. But maybe his assumption that she is unconscious is wrong, and it is a corpse that the dog is dragging behind it? Given the mighty roar that he emitted just a few seconds ago, Fred is astonished that the dog has not already fled. It must either be very brave and devoted to its task, or else stone deaf. Now that Fred has managed to stand, he is able to move without putting any further stress on his injured wing. He makes his way across the cavern on what he supposes he will have to get used to thinking of as his four legs rather than his legs and arms. "I won't hurt you," he tries to reassure the dog. He intends to say it softly, but it comes out extremely loudly.
