Astra noted an inscription on the flyleaf: To my dear friend Ben, from Jim Shirk. So it seemed that James Shirk was a real person, though it left open whether the adventures described in the book had any basis at all in fact or were pure fiction, perhaps written by a man who was not a ship's captain and had never gone to sea in his life. Judging by the pictures, the uncredited illustrator certainly didn't take the tales seriously, but she couldn't be sure whether the author also had his tongue in his cheek.
