"Good. I want to show you something, if you don't mind?" Fred nodded, and suddenly the room changed. He was no longer standing in the carpeted arena with his tormentor, Hyro. He was standing in a large field, looking at a house he immediately recognized. It was his father's old farmhouse, where Fred and his brother, Alma, grew up. Tears came to his eyes as he remembered his beloved brother. How they used to play on the farm while their father worked the fields. Their undying loyalty to each other, even to Alma D'Honaire's last breath. Fred wiped away the tears, trying to restrain himself. The Voice spoke again: "You remember? The place of your childhood. The beginnings of the friendship with your younger brother, who looked up to you. I am capable of pity, too, Fred. I'll tell you a secret that ties into your brother's fate. I have never told anyone this before, but I'm afraid I have nothing to lose now." Fred looked around, tears glistening on his face. He awaited the continuation of the story. "I've been waiting a long time to tell you this, Fred. You may not understand it now, but you will as I explain it to you. Alma started his quest for fire because of me. It was my fault. I set in him the Passion of Fire, a curse that I once thought was a gift. You see, it all started when I was a young man, and I became a student of Pyromancy. Hyrobjin was a studnet along with me, but he was cruel. He tormented me with his words, turned the whole school against me, and made my life a living hell. But I would not succumb. I knew that I was destined for something, even if no one else did. So I stood alone. As I learned, my power began to increase. I gained newfound wisdom, and wanted to gift those worthy to receive such, unlike my former adversaries. As it turns out, I became the greatest Pyromancer who ever lived, and I saved my city from an erupting volcano, saving the lives of thousands. But when Hyrobjin and his associates accused me of setting off the volcano in the first place, I was sentenced to death. I managed to escape without hurting anyone, and eventually came to what is now your land. I hid where this house now is and watched from afar as my old city decayed and crumbled to ruin, and as the subsequent eruptions covered all trace of the ruins, the culture, the language. Only Hyrobjin and myself are now left, and, as you have seen, he has not lost his knack for torturing others."
At this point of the narrative, Fred interupted. "You said Hyrbojin was ancient, which makes you just as ancient. How did you manage to outlive your own civilization? And just how long have you been alive?"
"Ah. I was meaning to tell you that. I have been alive for nearly forty thousand years. My civilization was comprised of 'giants,' such as myself, though you have not yet seen me. We are not related to the giants of today, however. Much more intelligent and able to live as long as we wished because of the Gift of Life we received long ago, we were also not the most ambitious of the Earth-races. We made our little cities and towns centered around the volcano, and it's warmth and elemental powers led us to discover the art of Pyromancy. Most of my people didn't care whether or not they died, because my race does not inherently value life like the mortals do. We do not fully understand this. But because my people despised me, I knew I was destined for something greater. But now I must tell you the tale of how I met your brother Alma."
