A Way of Escape?

"I don't know. But it's obviously the outside world out there, even if it's nothing like our own world. Those big moving metal boxes with windows are a bit scary. Can we find a way of enlarging the slot so that we can escape through it?"

1. Next to the fire extinguisher on the wall is a small axe. (It's strange that there should be a fire extinguisher but no fire exit, but then many things are strange in the vicinity of the Staircase Room.)
2. They find a screwdriver in the drawer of the librarian's desk.
3. They can't find a way of enlarging the slot. Punching it results only in bruised knuckles.
4. They try shouting through the slot at passers by, asking them to open the library door from the outside.
