"On reflection, for the girls suddenly all to develop very shrill voices might arouse suspicion. To make them vain or cruel would be quite hard, as changing a person's fundamental personality is always tricky. But extreme clumsiness should be quite easy to produce and is unlikely to make anyone suspect anything."

"Very well. There is a grand banquet this evening to mark Emry's and my return home, followed by a ball. All four girls will naturally be present. I look forward to seeing the results of your sorcery."

1. The banquet has hardly begun when Ilsa unfortunately somehow manages to upend her soup bowl in her lap. ruining her (unfortunately white) dress. Even worse, another girl knocks her wine glass over and some of the wine splashes over the king.
2. Nothing untoward happens during the banquet. But during the ball, one of the girls is dancing with the king when she accidentally trips him and he goes flying.
3. Nothing amiss happens. Has Belboz's sorcery failed?
