The Words Inside the Book

"Um... Selene?" Fred called.

"Yes?"

"You said you could read this?"

Selene glanced over Fred's shoulder at the book. "Of course. 'It is inadvisable to trick a dragon into guarding your treasure, as you will almost certainly be unable to recover the treasure afterwards.'"

"Incredible," Fred murmured, astounded.

"I don't see how that's going to help us," Selene said.

"That particular piece of advice--wise as it is--is entirely worthless. The fact that you can make sense of this gobbledygook is potentially worth a great deal more."

"Isn't it just plain English?" Selene asked, confused.

"No, but if my guess is correct, it's a language used by a tribe of dragon-hunters who, up until they disappeared thirty years ago, traveled the world doing exactly the sorts of things I'm supposed to be doing! How did you ever learn to read this?"

Selene shrugged. "Five days, remember?"

1. Fred asked Selene to read the book to him.
2. Fred tries to help Selene recover her earlier memories.
3. The mention of a dragon-hunting tribe causes Selene to almost remember something.
