There was a pause, and Jastina grinned ear to ear. "What a marvelous idea," she cried. "Except this. Don't just add sixty pounds. Add a hundred. Or some hideous scar or deformity. Or scores of warts, or gnarled fingers. Or all! There can be no uncertainty. Emry must despise them the minute he sees them."

"But Jastina," said Belboz, "wouldn't the King wonder at such drastic and sudden changes?"

"Oh, yes," Jastina acknowledged, rather unhappily.

"But, here is what I can do," said Belboz.

  1. "I can do it gradually—add a few pounds daily until they could be mistaken for elephants. But, that might take more time than you can afford."
  2. "I can stage some terrible accident which would be cause for hideous scars. But, that would in turn be cause for investigation."
  3. "I can change their appearances completely, and introduce them as different people. But, with their diminished intellects, they may not be able to deal with that."
