The lady-in-waiting's name was Gemma. She was a bit stout but really a pretty woman, with straight chestnut hair, a dust of freckles, and big brown eyes. But she was also far less enchanted with her title than she'd been starting out, and when she realized that the new Queen was so easy to bend--well, she wasn't about to let an opportunity like this slip by. The court wizard, Hammond, collected some of Lilith's and Gemma's hair to use in the potions that would make them look like each other, and gave it to them while the three of them were alone in Lilith's chamber. He had only to say, "Drink this, your Majesty," and drink Lilith did, with no hesitation, though there was alarm in her eyes. The two women soon felt rather woozy, and had to sit down. Within minutes, a constant tingling covered every area of their bodies, and their features began to change. Soon enough, their transformations were complete. Gemma, who now perfectly resembled Lilith, stood up, stumbled, righted herself, and turned to face the changed Queen, who was staring down at herself with shock in her eyes, mouth open. "Don't scream," Gemma ordered. "In fact, don't say a word till you've left this room." Lilith's mouth snapped shut. Gemma smiled. "Now get out of your dress and switch with me." Indeed, their clothes were now rather ill-fitting, as Gemma was--or had been--much taller and more broad-shouldered than the petite Queen. Lilith complied, and soon enough nothing would have been amiss to anyone who happened to walk into the room. Gemma examined the beautiful gown and her new body in the mirror as Hammond said to Lilith,
