These mermaids seemed rather minimalist--their buildings were mostly natural orifices in stone, and the merchildren were contenting themselves just chasing around fish and each other, laughing gleefully, while their parents floated off to the side watching.
Fred descended to the small group of adult merpeople, trying to figure out what to say. She still hadn't come to a conclusion when one of the females noticed her and said, "Hello there. Do you need directions?" Fred shrugged. "I... ah..." "Oh dear. Tired, are you? Why don't you have a rest. What's your name?"
Fred got herself into the pseudo-sitting position the other merpeople seemed to be in, stalling for time, realizing she knew nothing of merfolk culture, and how difficult that would make this. "Wait," a merman said. "I bet it's Waverly. It's Waverly, right? You look just like one." Fred nodded, a little too fast. "Yep. That's it. That's my name." "So Waverly," another mermaid said.
