When Connar goes out to play with the children after breakfast the following morning, the guard who stands with them turns around quickly after their laughter turns into a chorus of meows. There is now a group of cats drowning in the royal family's clothes. The guard rushes for the magician and the queen, and when the three run back out, the two guards who had been at the front of the garden are struggling to keep all the cats from running off. The only adult is being fairly cooperative, but the smaller ones won't stop moving. Diana acts devastated by her family's transformation, and publicly commissions Mirdox to find whoever did this. Really, though, she is just relieved to be rid of the pressure for a little while. She does not blame herself one bit for that. A few days pass, which Diana spends very busily, as she is now in change of running a kingdom. The cats are cared for 24 hours a day, and somebody is always watching them. They act catlike but seem fairly aware, or at least Connar and the oldest children do. After about four weeks of freedom, though, it is clear that they all have cat minds. They are selfish, antisocial, and unfriendly—well, except for the smallest kittens—and spend their days eating and sleeping. And they no longer seem to understand when people talk to them.
