Diana goes to the court magician, Mirdox, and asks him if he could use magic to take away her voice. "Hypothetically, yes, it would be quite easy," he says. "Why do you ask?" "Because I want to do it. Do the spell on me, or mix the potion. I command it." "What?" he cries, startled. "Princess, I—" "I am your princess, and you will do as I say. If my father directly asks you about this, I have not the authority to tell you to lie. But I do command that, until he does, you not speak a word of this to any living soul." Mirdox doesn't know what to do. Finally, he just says, still bewildered, "Don't worry, princess, I'll have the potion ready tomorrow." She comes the following afternoon and readily downs the vile-looking grey liquid with which Mirdox presents her. Within two minutes after that, when she tries to speak, she cannot produce a sound. Her father is devastated that his daughter has lost her voice, but Connar is pleased. He of course makes this known to none but Diana, but even so. He is just a little bit happier, and that was all Diana wanted. But then a week or so later he has a series of questions to ask her, and when she has to painstakingly write out every answer, he slaps her in frustration. "You useless woman," he snarls, and leaves the room. After that he doesn't allow her to sit in on his portrait being painted for the castle walls anymore, which she's been enjoying watching. He won't go riding if she's in the group, and in general he avoids her if at all possible. Word quickly spreads that the new prince seems to hate his princess, but that the princess doesn't seem to mind at all. Diana still loves Connar so much, she knows he doesn't mean to hurt her; he's far too good a person for that. He treats everyone else decently. A few months after their marriage...
