The man pulled Stacy through the screaming confusion that the bookshop had
become and dragged her through a window whose glass had been blown out in
the assualt moments before. Behind her, she could hear the creatures
shrieking "Exterminate! Exterminate!" in horrible, grating metallic voices.
Numbly, Stacy allowed him to pull her down the street at a run. Several
blocks away, he finally ducked into an alley, and at last let go of her
arm. "I think we should be safe for the moment," he said. "I don't
believe they saw us leaving." "What..." Stacy had trouble getting the words out of her throat. "What are those things? Why were they attacking the bookstore? Who... Who are you?" A concerned look crossed his somewhat battered face. "Oh, dear," he said, putting a gentle hand to her forehead. "The amnesia's returned, has it?" "I don't remember having amnesia," she said. Then the ridiculousness of that remark hit her, and she began to laugh uncontrollably. "Now, steady on, old girl," said the man. "You've had a bit of a shock, but it's all right now." Stacy drew a deep breath, suddenly re-finding calmness and control. She looked him straight in the eye. "Start at the beginning," she said.
