"I've just realised," Stacy said. "Nielson didn't have the disk. I gave it
to your
colleague at the coffee shop." "And he brought the disk back
here and we found it was totally blank." Stacy's expression looked as
blank as the disk
for a moment, but then light dawned. "Nielson must have switched disks!"
she said. "I
bumped into him in the hall, just as I was going out to the coffee shop.
[8331] But
the disk was in my bag. I don't see how he could have done the switch. Or
how he
could even have known that there was a disk to be switched. I'd only
copied the
file from my PC to the disk shortly before."
"He probably had surveillance equipment set up in your office, and saw what you were doing and where you put the floppy. Then he engaged you in conversation in the hall, and while you were distracted switched the disks. We'd already figured he must have switched them, though we didn't know the details. That's why I told you we had to get the disk - the original disk - back." Stacy nodded as if in agreement, but her mind was racing. This didn't seem to add up. It hadn't occurred to her before, but why hadn't Nielson simply had the hard drive of her PC wiped, just in case there was anything incriminating on it? Had he been careless through over-confidence that the amnesia treatment would prevent her ever reappearing at work? If that was the case, though, why the surveillance equipment? Or had that been there all along, when she had been working on the story?
