The moon showed about three-quarters full. Catherine realised that, having
come back
in time fifteen years, she had no idea whether it was waxing - in which
case she
had only some three or four days until it was full - or waning - in which
case she had
the better part of a month. Damn! Why hadn't she thought to ask Myrddin
the one question
that was of such importance to her? She tried to remember whether the moon
rising in
late afternoon meant that it would be waxing or waning, but could not
recall.
She thought that, even if the moon was waxing, she should be able to reach the entrance to the caves before it became full. This was in spite of her now being on foot. The pony that she had acquired when she had the body of a little girl would now have been rather small for her, and in any case when she had attempted to approach it after her anchoring it had shied away from her in fear. It must have been able to detect the wolf in her. She wasn't sure whether the lycanthropy would affect her when she was underground or whether she had to actually see the full moon for the change to occur. Something else she hadn't thought to ask Myrddin, she realised with irritation. She found a sheltered spot under a large tree suitable for spending the night, and made her supper from the provisions that Myrddin had given her, before settling down to try to sleep. In fact she slept reasonably well, though she awoke cold and stiff. She traveled on all that day without seeing anyone, for this region was but sparsely populated. Towards evening, the moon rose again.
