Heading South - Or Maybe North

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 10102

Meanwhile Astra looked around her. It was a fairly warm but heavily overcast day, so she could not get her bearings from the sun. Behind her was the range of mountains out of which the river had emerged. Assuming the range must be the Shreken, she had either emerged somewhere on its southern flank, in which case she was already in Aqualaria and following the river would take her deeper into the country, or she was on the range's northern flank, in which case she would need to cross the mountains.

Astra decided that she might as well think positively. Since she had no chance of crossing the mountains without either clothes or supplies, she would assume that she was on the Aqualarian side. Therefore she would follow the river. That also would mean much easier going than if she were to try to scale the hills on one or other side of the river valley.

She had only covered a mile or so, however, when the river curved to the left through almost ninety degrees. That meant that to keep going south - assuming that she had been going south - she would need to climb the hill ridge on the river's right-hand side. Fortunately she happened to be on that side, so at least she wouldn't need to cross the stream.

For a moment Astra was tempted to keep following the river, for the going would be much easier. Then it occurred to her that from the top of the ridge, if the trees permitted she might get enough of a view of the surrounding countryside to help her orientate herself. She therefore started to climb the ridge, whose highest point was about a thousand feet above the river.

  1. Before she had got very far, unbeknown to her a boat carrying eight of Zodin's men emerged into daylight a mile or so upstream.
