And the return journey would be even more problematic, since how could one climb back up here again? I don't see any exit on the far side, so this is the only way out."

"Haven't you got any rope in your pack? If you have, then getting back up here would pose me no problem. It would also let me climb down, rather than having to dive into water of unknown depth and risk cracking my skull open. Yes, I said 'me'. Since I'm already naked, I'm the natural choice for the one to swim across."
