Fred is Left Out

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 29351

Fred could almost taste his fear as he ran. This was not new to him, for as the son of an Allarian nobleman he had tasted death before. The internecine wars and skirmishes with barbarian tribes and inhuman monstrosities were a part of everyone's life. Although he did not take part in them directly, they affected him too. And he had been trained in the ways of the sword since he was six. But actually knowing it first hand was different. And these were not enemies that honest steel could conquer, but clearly creatures of eldritch magic. Fred would not be as afraid if he weren't so lost. Jon, on the other hand, seemed completely in control--after all, he knew magic, and he was older.

They practically crashed into the guards stationed in the nearby hallway. The guards pulled out their swords with a sharp noise, prepared to fight any threat, but put their swords at rest when they saw that it was only Jon. They did not re-sheathe them, though.

"Hello there young'un," said a guard affectionately. "Why aren't you two in bed?"

"Oh !rom, it's... There's these black-cloaked things and they got McGillicuddy and they said something about art facts and..."

"You had a nightmare? Go back to bed," said taller and more muscular guard, gruffly.

"No, it happened," said Jon, taking charge immediately. He gave a detailed, vivid, and convincing account of what had happened. The guards seemed to listen to him now, and they became troubled. Why didn't anyone listen to Fred? After all, he was a D'Honaire too, and his brother lied more often than he did.

"We'll go rouse your father," said the head guard. They flanked around the boys and marched them through the dark and spacious hallways to the majestic chamber of Duke Charles D'Honaire, father to Frederigo and Jonathan.

He burst into the bedroom and grabbed onto his mother, who was holding the baby, Jarlath. "Mommy, mommy, mommy!" he cried out. "Qrom, it--"

"What's wrong, child?" asked Champlaine, his mother.

Before Fred could say anything, Jon broke in and explained everything again. Fred wondered if he was getting tired of it. Fred's father was a majestic man who looked like he could make anything right, but his face was troubled now, and this frightened Fred more than anything else. "Don't worry," he told Fred. He then turned to the guards. "We'll rouse everyone and then investigate the Vault. Fred, you stay here with your mother. Jon, you come with me."

Fred's fear was replaced by chagrin. Why did they take Jon along and not him? He was as much a part of this as his brother! True, he reluctantly admitted, it had scared him, but it was still the adventure he'd been waiting for, and he didn't want it taken away.

  1. Reluctantly, Fred stays where he is.
  2. Fred sneaks out to follow the guards.
