A Night at the Movies

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 12477

It turned out that there was quite an extensive collection of movies on some sort of futuristic (from a 20th-century perspective) mini-DVD format deep in one of the TARDIS' storerooms. The correct disc having been found, Betty and the others quickly set up a mini-theater in a large, disused room. The disc player was hooked up to a large-screen TV (or at least, the screen from something), chairs were brought in, and buckets of popcorn passed around. And so, for the next couple of hours, this motley group of extradimensional beings (plus one dimensional native) were engrossed in the story of hacker Martin Bishop (aka Martin Bryce) and his team as they were hired by the NSA to steal an "item," discovered that the "item" was a super code-breaking chip, realized that the people that had hired them weren't the NSA, stole it back, and foisted off a fake copy on the real NSA (keeping the genuine item for themselves).

"Cool," Ragan remarked to her "sister" when it was over. "I'd forgotten what a good movie that was."

"So that's what Inquirer and the Doctor have gotten themselves mixed up in?" mused Betty. "Geez. Are some people just magnets for trouble or what?"

"Hey, can we watch the Blake's 7 tapes now, while we've got the TV hooked up?" said Ragan, with a gleam in her eye.

Betty gave her a look of rebuke. "This stuff is going on, and you want to watch TV?"

"Hey, you'd say the same thing in my place!"

Well, her counterpart couldn't really argue with that. Instead she said, "Well, let's just stay focused on the issue at hand for a moment, OK? What do you think they're going to do?"

"Oh," Ragan shrugged. "Steal the thing back, I suppose. It should be a lot easier than it was in the movie, what with all this advanced technology and magic and stuff..."

"Maybe," Betty replied distractedly.

"Of course, it'd pay to be careful, anyway. We can't count on things going exactly as they did in the movie. Certainly the Doctor Who stuff hasn't followed the TV show in my world. Or yours!"

"You know, this is all taking some getting used to. I mean... This isn't some weird alternate dimension. This is my world! And, you know, it's a bit disconcerting to think that... Well, that this stuff that I always thought only happened in the movies actually happens here."

"Yeah," said Ragan. "I understand." She smiled. "Well, of course I do, don't I?"

"Yeah. And that takes even more getting used to!"

They both laughed, somewhat self-consciously.

  1. After a pause, Ragan said "I wonder how the Doc and Inquirer are getting on?"
