And finally there is perhaps the question of why a story with fantasy and science fiction.... Well, the answer to that particular question lays in part to the laws of nature of Terra Prime and many ofher parallel versions of herself. See, this universe is like the universe of Star Trek (where some havesaid that anything is possible if they travel far enough), the universe of Doctor Who (where some have said anything is possible if theytravel far enough), and in many ways like the world which Stephen King's The Dark Tower stories takeplace. Many things are possible here. What makes magic possible here as this story has unfolded is thata certain kind of energy exists here that isn't present in large enough quantities in the environment ofthe Star Trek universe. What makes magic usage in this universe is that unlike in the Doctor Who universe (as it's come about in this epic) is that there are people who've discovered how to harness it, believe in it, anduse it in a way that's relatively easy to use. That, apparently, wasn't the case in the Doctor Who universe, where there happens to be that mystical energy, but few to no people either believe in it....and apparently fewerpeople know how to use it easily to where non-believers would see it in action...and thus be convinced. As for any purist objections to the mixing of magic and science fiction in this story, well, I can only say thatI never was good at just straight, old fashion fantasy. This is a story about people, not of just magic and mystical forces. People can adopt and overcome, and as such the people of Terra Prime are adopting to a new, differentreality. Period. |
