Note: The "epic" storyline is, in many parts, fanfiction. A tribute to various authors and stories written by others. As such, I will give credit where credit is due.... Next, we explore what the idea is behind Terra Prime! Modern day style of speak and terms? Terra Prime is something of a enigma, to say the least. Many of the locals, even before the coming of the Enemy/Alliance War, spoke in a manner that was....oh so very...er...modern. That is, their mode of speech, terms used, and other things like that are definitely anachronistic! See, the source of this "cross culture" contamination lays within the hands of those who gaze upon other worlds through magic either intentionally (i.e. mages through magical scryings) or by accident (i.e. those prone to magical fits visions). They saw and heard this foreign stuff and then use it in the normal course of things, and it spread throughout common culture, eventually. Point in fact, that is the story for MANY of the other worlds...in one fashion or anther, perhaps. Sure is the case for each and every magical world we've seen so far in the both the Doctor Who: the Eternal Champion thread and the As the Fur Flies: The Tail of Frederigo D'Honaire thread. Religion? Well, as uncomfortable as it may be, this subject, it does come up. The Christian Church, with perhaps the branch down in Ethiopia being an exception, had not broken up yet (i.e. Catholic and the various Protestant branches) by the coming of the Enemy/Alliance war. Why this was was, in a large part, due to the fact that the Church's attention was focused, and had been focused for a long time, in trying to break into the still Pagan areas up in northern Aeurope. Crusades to Christianize it kept on failing. This focusing kept the Church from growing....well....it kept the issues within this Church from happening as it had in Earth's history at this point in time. With the coming of the Phage, the only part of the Church organized enough to pull it back together and lead....was the long lost Ethiopian branch, more on that later. Meanwhile, up until this time, the Muslims were having this issue with the nation of Ethiopia. Seems that Prestor John (uh....seems that in this history Ethiopia had been more than merely the inspiration for what proved to be a fictional Christian kingdom on Earth) had made many enemies to a point that the Muslim kingdoms kept on trying to isolate and destroy Ethiopia. Isolate it from the rest of the world they could for the most part, but Ethiopia was able to hold out (and then some) for several centuries! Being that the Ethiopian branch of the Christian Church had been isolated, by and large, from the rest of the Church, and that this nation seems to have a larger proportion of high intellect types (a sign of God's favor, they say), it meant that this branch developed a bit....differently. The isolation means that the Ethiopian clergy must make their own religious determinations. As for high intellect types, well, they tend to look at things a bit....differently than normal folks do and leave it at that. Indeed, in many ways it's more progressive and such than the mainstream Church had been before the coming of the Phage. Afterwards, the Ethiopian branch inherited the mantle of leadership of the Christian Church and thus their views on things became the accepted views on things...eventually. As for the other, human, religions they've grown and evolved over time to change with the times. Things like the Olympian church (i.e. the old pagan Greek religion) being headed now by Artemis instead of Zeus. Things like the both the Olympian and the Norse churches move away from a fate based existence to where free will amongst humans now was in existence. Mayhaps it was a bid to keep worshiper from being drawn away into the Christian Church. Mayhaps it was actually due to true dictates from the dieties above. Maybe it's what the rules and Agents wanted. All have been put forward by various people, and no clear...irrefutable proof pointing to any one answer. Next, much to the dismay of some religious purists of various nonhuman races, their has been....mixing between races in the traditionally race based religions of Terra Prime. Over time, more and more non-human people are finding faith in other races' religious beliefs (an example would be that more and more elves are turning to religions like Christianity, belief in Dwarven gods, and such). Finally, on a personal note from me (aka MSG) about the nebulous nature of the question of religion on Terra Prime (and throughout the two stories here). It's nebulous because I do not wish to suggest that any one religious view is superior.....one is correct and all the others are wrong. It's like that. I wouldn't like it done with my religious views (even in a fictional setting) and I'm sure the same is true with most everyone else! And finally there is perhaps the question of why a story with fantasy and science fiction.... |
