"A bit of a shock, eh?" McCoy said sympathetically. Fred just nodded.

"I suppose I shouldn't really be smiling," McCoy said, "but I can't help but see the prospect of a new life as being a happy thing. It could be less than happy for you, though. Starfleet are unlikely to be overjoyed that one of their officers has got herself pregnant during a tour of duty. I'm afraid it could mean the end of your promising career, Lieutenant. And of course we're only halfway through our five year mission, so there's no way of getting you back to Earth quickly. I doubt that Jim will let you stay aboard the Enterprise during the later stages of your pregnancy, so we'll need to find a suitable planet that Earth has settled where we can drop you off. Unless - and I hate to suggest this - you were to have an abortion."

Fred shook her head. "I couldn't do that. I believe in the sanctity of human life."

"Well, good for you. I'm glad to see you have that attitude. Are you going to tell me who the father is? I won't tell anyone, of course, but it's up to you."
